Interesting infographic. I noticed China wasn’t represented
.
One thing the picture doesn’t capture is the differing respect that parents have for teachers. When I began teaching overseas, I was amazed by the amount of parents who dressed formally for parent-teacher conferences. Every child is represented at parent night, and a good number of teachers attend any and all additional parent workshops the school offers (we have a PE night, a math night, a literacy night, word-study workshops, technology workshops, and parenting sessions). Not just mothers come – fathers come too.
When I read articles about the need for teacher accountability in America, I’m struck by the undertones that teachers need to “prove” themselves worthy of respect or pay. I love working in a country where the respect comes as part of the profession. That respect is worth far more than money.
